On Thursday 11th September 2014, Phoenix Publishers was proud to unveil Out of the Box, by 8-year-old Ngure Matu Ndiritu, a class 3 pupil at Kilimani Junior Academy. The guest of honour for this one-of-a-kind occasion was H.E Mwai Kibaki, CGH, 3rd President of the republic of Kenya. Ngure goes down history as being the youngest published author in Kenya. His book is part of a new series entitled, Books for Children by Children. The series is aimed at identifying, nurturing and developing young talent so that children can contribute to the world’s body of literature.
Phoenix titles A Name for Himself by Erick Livumbazi Ngoda and Meet the Omtitas by journalist Tony Mochama emerged first and second runners up in the second Burt Award Prize for African literature in the award ceremony at Silver Springs Hotel on 27th September 2013.
The award is sponsored by a Canadian philanthropist, Bill Burt recognizes excellence in young adult fiction in Kenya. It is extended to the NBDCK (for administration in Kenya) by the Canadian Organization for Development through Education (CODE).
